How a Cycling Crash Started a Decaf Revolution
Coffee was never just a habit. It was a ritual: comforting, flavourful, and very much a part of every day. Multiple cups were the norm. Then one ordinary cycling day, everything changed.
Going over the handlebars is every cyclist's worst nightmare. The injury that followed was serious, and part of the recovery process meant removing caffeine to protect sleep quality and support healing. Coffee was still on the table. Caffeine was not.
That's when the search for great decaf began.
It Should Have Been Simple.
It wasn't. Visit after visit to grocery stores yielded the same disappointing options: over-roasted, stale, and nothing close to what a genuine coffee lover would want to drink. The quality simply wasn't there.
Going directly to specialty roasters was a game-changer. Fresher beans, more care in the roasting process, and a noticeably better cup. But even then, most roasters carried only one decaf option. Part of what makes coffee so enjoyable is the variety in origins, processes, and flavour profiles. One option wasn't enough.
Then Recovery Came. So Did the Data.
Once cleared to reintroduce caffeine, the effects were immediate and measurable. Resting heart rate climbed. Sleep quality dropped. Fitness tracking backed up what the body was already saying. Decaf wasn't just a temporary fix, it had become a genuine preference.
Then came another health scare, this time a heart concern flagged during a routine scan. Until a specialist could weigh in, caffeine was off the table again. Back to decaf, with even more conviction.
Then the Idea Clicked.
If this journey was so common, why was finding great decaf still so hard? Asking around confirmed it, many people had quietly given up coffee altogether because the decaf options available to them simply weren't good enough. When they tried the specialty decaf that had been sourced through this journey, the reaction was the same every time: genuine surprise at how good it was.
That moment was the beginning of Decaffeinated in Canada. A curated destination for Canadians who love coffee, need to reduce their caffeine, and refuse to settle for a bad cup.
