Our Story
How Decaffeinated in Canada Started
But first coffee...
Coffee was a daily routine and normally involved many cups. It was comforting, flavourful, enjoyable. and caffeinated.
Then life happens...
What was a normal day and a normal cycling day, I went over the handlebars. The worst nightmare for any cyclist. Came out with a serious injury. Removing caffeine intake was recommended to ensure a good night's sleep as part of the recovery process.
This is when I sourced various decaffeinated coffee options.
It should have been easier...
Sourcing high-quality decaffeinated coffee was not as easy as I thought it was going to be. Went to many grocery stores, the quality was not where I would want it. Overall most decaf coffee was over-roasted for my liking and often stale.
Starting to go directly from roasters...
Going direct to roasters is an instant way to get a better cup of decaf. It will naturally be fresher as it is on the shelf shortly after roasting.
There was one difficulty with one decaf option available. Few roasters will have multiple decaf options. The coffee is better, but it could be a lot of the same. A large part of the enjoyment of coffee is in consuming the wide spectrum of flavours.
Then I recovered...
Caffeine is now something I could bring back in. However, I found out the impacts of caffeine. My resting heart rate rose. My sleep quality decreased. With fitness tracking, numbers backed up the reintroduction of caffeine. Decaf was going to be a part of my coffee routine.
Then life happens again...
Like many other people, I had a heart issue from a scan. Until I saw a specialist, caffeine was off limits. Back on decaf.
Then the idea happened...
More people have to have stories with caffeine and need to move to decaffeinated coffee. As I started to ask around, I was not alone. Many people cut out their coffee consumption because the decaf options were not satisfying. Sharing the decaffeinated coffee I sourced, they were surprised by how good a cup of decaf is. Decaf coffee can be good! This was when Decaffeinated in Canada was born.
